Landry was known for saying, “Hey! Don’t give me the ZotZ!” and so the name became attached to the little candies that were growing in popularity. The name came from a 1962 William Castle film that starred Tom Poston and Jim Backus.
Landry started importing more of the fun candies that his kids had loved and renamed them “ZotZ”. Landry’s children went nuts for the yummy little fizzy candies and they begged for more of the “funny fizzy candy”. After one of those trips, he brought some candy home from one of his visits to Italy. After the company was passed to Landry, he started taking trips to Italy to monitor the candy and honey companies. Prost traveled to France to retire in 1964 and he died shortly after he arrived. They created marzipan and other delightful confectionary items that sold well in the US. He had a partner, Frank Landry, who helped him manage the company they built, the Andre Prost Co. This honey business along with the candy business became his new passion and he put effort into this project until his health started to fail him. The slogan for the company originally was, “Honey From Here, There, and Everywhere.” At the same time, he had created the Andre Post Co to sell quality honey and honey products. This is where he bought confectionaries made by G.B. He tried his hand at a variety of different food-based careers and sales and he started importing food items from Como, Italy. He lost this job during World War I and as a result, had to figure out a new career after the war due to prohibition. This gave him skills and interest in fine foods and desserts. Prost had worked his way up the ladder at Cuisinier which made fine liqueurs before World War I. ZotZ candies did not arrive in America until 1968 when it was brought to the US by Andre Prost. Knowing if a product is vegan or not, is not always that easy because some ingredients that might look vegan, sometimes aren’t. ZOTZ candy is not the perfect vegan candy because of the artificial colors used. Some health issues are also connected to artificial colors such as hyperactivity in kids. There are also other know testing methods such as computer simulations that hopefully can replace animal testing in the future. However there are also people that are eating a plant-based diet for health reason and they also have a choice to consume these colors. These colors are known for being tested on animals and many vegans tends to stay away from products containing them. Artificial ColorsĪrtificial colors are also controversial within the vegan community and the reason for this is animal testing. A common method is to use bone char from dead cows and would in many vegans eyes make the sugar non-vegan, because it’s exploiting animals in the production process. In the candy and sweets industry, cane sugar is commonly used and in it’s raw form it is 100% vegan, but when it gets refined that can cause problems for vegans.Ĭane sugar needs to be refined most of time to fit the product better and in this process it’s also bleached. This ingredient is something that vegans needs to be aware of, because there are occasions where sugar could be classified as non-vegan.
